WANGANUI WOOL

YESTERDAYS SALE PRICE LEVELS REMAIN FIRM SPLENDID CLEARANCE CONTINENTAL DOMINATION ; GERMANY BUYS WELL. Values at recent sales were fully maintained at Wanganui yesterday , when a total offering of 30,000 bales of wool was submitted to auction before a full bench of buyers. Weil spread bidding, at all times dominated by the Continent, resulted in an excellent clearance, between 96 and 97 per cent of the offering, at prices satisfactory to growers. It wag the first Wan- , ganui sale of the current season i and aroused wide public interest. | If wa* evident that while the buyers I «ere operating on limits, there was plenty of rompetitiou at ruling values.! Continental operators secured the I major share of the wool, and it was noticeable that Germany was strongly i tn the marker. One broker alone re-; ports the sate of approximately 1900 j bales to that quarter. Bradford helped to maintain the competition and again gave evidence of a steadv return :«■ | previous strength. It was apparent, however, that that section nf the trade) still needs more flexible limits to be I able to keep pace with Continental 1 competitors. J.tpsn bought extensiMy • from those clips which were suitable • tn her requirements. Late shearing had an effect on rhe ; get-up of severai clips, seed «h«»wing I through in above average quantity. In; several instances a disinclination to, skirt thoroughly resulted in seed and . dirty wool pulling down the value *»f j certain line* which would have :v. ■ j aged out on a much higher level h» • , their get tip been improved. ! a *«i . over all. the catalogue was one r.nr: entlv suited to the requirements nf the! Continental trade. Bradford s opera- ; rion« being directed to the average to ; good top-making sorts. American bid-*' ding was not prominent, due entirely’ to the fact that the offering was not ' .suitable for that trade. Rroker« f reports show that ruling: values were maintained. Finer vools . showed a farthing to a half-penny rise, on the price range established at " e|- : Fngton recently. Seventeen pence . farthing was rhe top price of the sale, j realised fo r a parfieularlr fine line of I Cnrrtedate wool submitted bv Messrs. , Pernie Bros. L «a« noticeable that wren the range of prices forged up • ahnvp fourteen to fifteen pence. New Zealand mills, especially Ross and , Glendining. were keen competitors, most of the higher prated wools findisg purchasers in that quarter. France’s name was prominent in the sales of; necks and bellies. Vsked to briefly sum rhe «ate up, a prominent broker said to the ••Chro • niele” yesterday that it was a t on • tinental market, the outlook had nevrt ■ been brighter since 1934 and the read! nes< of growers to meet the offers * values was encouraging. He said th it the clearance was an effective imp and by the time the season was over, pro i ided the range of prices remained firm, there would be little hold wool to earrv over to the next season. Another broker agreed with that vi » v and added that the market was n »’ . expected to fluctuate before the «-te«e of the season and rhe range of vahie< . a« set bv thi* sale could i»e looked i upon as being fairly stable. Competition was well spread, with the Continent the largest, buyeis. There were a few lots in the sate which were suitable for Japan, and it was noticeable on these that that country was veix- strong. Johnston and Co., Ltd., report that keen interest was taken in the first Wanganui wool sale of the season, which was held yesterday, when an oii'eiing of 3(1,00 bales was submitted to a large and represent alive bench of buyers. Taking our ottering as a whole, the wools opened up in good average condition, and we catalogue! a large asfsortment ef good erossbrel v.uols, we J igrown and bugiti in appearance. I Prices showed a very marked irniproxement on those ruling last season, land cau be quoted as fully firm on realisations at the Wellington ind Napier sales held since the Aew Year. Competition was animated throughout the sale, the bidding being well spread betwen Bradford and the Continental section of the trade. France was also very much in evidence, ami purchased frely of lines suitable, for her requirements. Lambs, in our opinion, were disappointing to a certain extent, but all other grades of wool sold exceptionally well, and passings were very few. In view of the improvement in the wool market, since last season, ir. had been expected that there would be a su!.»staniial advance, and in this respect growers’ expectations were realised. Of this offering- we contributed 3501) bales and sold flu per cent, under the hammer. I’he new season's wool opened up is good order, being well-grown and bright with the exception of some of the hogget will which was rather dull in appearance due no doubt to the wet spell experienced during shearing. Competition was very animated and prices were fully on pat with Wellington and Napier levels. Japan. America, and the Continent were again the principal buyers with solid support coming from Bradford and Germany. The top price in our catalogue was 17|d for eight bales from rhe well-known Otamoa clip of Messrs. Fernie Bros. Another line of 46 bales in this clip realised 16|d. Messrs. J 935-36 season was held yesterday before a fuil and representative bench of buyers. The total offering was a shade over bales of which our catalogue comprised 3741 bales. We sold 98 per cent at auction. Most of the catalogues comprised a fair proportion of held-over wool which opened up in fairly good order. Bidding was fairly brisk right throughout the sale and values were firm on recent sales held in other centres. As compared with our last sale, last season we quote an advance in prices from 2d

to 3d per lb. for fleece wool. Bidding was well spread between Bradford and the Continent, the main feature being the large amount of wool lifted by Ger many, who have up to this sale, bought very sparingly. There was a full and representative bench of buyers who competed keenly from ' start to finish and prices Vompared i with the sale at the eml of last week I were from par to in buyers’ favour for good wools, but for ordinary topmaking and inferior sorts the market was inclined to be just a shade easier. Be.liies and pieces were in good demand but were from par to in buyers’ favour, but, this can be accounted for as these were coarser and contained more Main-s and probably if this is | taken into account there w?ts little or no change in value. Lambs' wool, of which there was a fair enlrv, was a little easier, but. we think these were not quite up to the ns-nal standard in this cemtre, they being duller in colour and inclined to be rather coarser. Competition was very keen and bidding was more spread than at any previous I sale this season, all sections being in ' the market, and we consider this one! of the healthiest signs and looks as if, wool values will be maintained. This season s wool opened up in good condition, but was inclined to handle 1 rather harsher than last year, th s being accounted for by the verv we: ■ period when shearing was on and the want of sunshine to bring up the yolk. Many good clips were spoiled a little j by being seedy; also in many case- I the clips were This, we! think, is a mistake on the grotvers' j part as rheie is no doubt that well i skirted clips command more attention | a>nd elicit keener <-ompetition. and as i bellies ami nieces are in suvh keen de- j ma nd and are realising such good i prices we think it would pay the grower I to skirt, his wool.
