SCHOOL OF SCULPTORS Four very young sculptors have combined to push Epstein off his pcdes'tal, writes a London journalist. 'l’hey are John and Vivian Cole, Hamish Macpherson, and iMichael Foley, and they i have formed themselves into a group in'tended to make the most advanced schools of “moderns” look like a col- j le'e.tion of Old blasters. i “Ail the so-called ‘young sculptors’ of to-day are about forty,” laughed John Cole. Ait twenty-eight he is the senior member of the four. “Most of them should be drawing the old-age pension. They are no longer modem. I We consider ourselves in advance of j Epstein, whose inspiration i.s archaic.” ' Hamish Macpherson. who is only nineteen, has farmed in New Zealand a.nd starved in London. He is now respectably at work on panels for the first-class saloon of the Queen Mary. He added valiantly to John, “We are the babies of sculpture.” Judging by their exhibition, which opened recently, Epstein is due to fa.ll with a big crash. Red-haired Mr Foley specialises in religious sculpture —]\fa-don>nas and prophets and monks. John and Vivian Cole, whose work is as “ultra” as Vivian’s pale grey neuk-wear and flannel trousers, runs a very practical pottery kiln. Raw-boned JTamish Macpherson, taking Vivian as his model, has produced a tormented head labelled: “A Vorticist,” which even he is unable to explain. “Jns-t an impression I got,” was all he could say about iV
