THEFT CONVICTIONS
COMPANY AGENT SENTENCED (Per Press Association. J CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 16. Henry Alan Moray Smith, compand agent, 28, appeared before Mr Reid. S.M., lor sentence on five charges of theft from the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company at Raha.ia of sums totalling £153 9s lOd. Ho also appeared for sentence on a charge k of stealing £4l from William Wilson Carruthers. Loun.se! for Smith, Mr R. A. Young, said that Smith maintained that the defalcations had been brought about, by frequemt extadssive calls cn his salThe said it appeared clear that the company paid Smith an adequate salary f)r a man of his age and position, and had paid oil reasonable expenses. Smith had endeavoured to live o-n a scale far beyond his age and position. On the first charge, Smith was co-nvieted and admitted to probation for three years, a special condition being that, he make restitution of £194 9s 10d and £2 expenses within six months. On the remaining eharge-s he was convicted and discharged. _______
