Meteorological Office, Wellington, Thursday, Jan. 16, 4 p.m. General Situation.—A rather deep westerly depression is advancing across the South Tasman and is affecting the soutksrn part of the South Island. Forecast. —Winds: Moderate to strong north to west winds, reaching gale force in places and backing to south-west later in the far south. Seas (N.Z. waters): Rough in the Cook Strait area and rising generally south of Cape Egmont, elsewhere slight to moderate. Eastern Tasman’ Sea: Moderate to strong northerly winds, backing later to southerlies; seas moderate but increasing. Weather: Becoming unsettled in'districts with a westerly aspect and some rain developing and later extending to parts of eastern districts of the South Island. Sunset to-day; 7.51 p.m. Sunrise to-morrow: 5.12 a.m. Phases of the Moon.—First quarter, January 2; full moon, January 9; last quarter, January 17; new moon, January 24; first quarter, January 31.
