VALUABLE STATUETTE
■ LUCKY PURCHASE BY BRITISH OFFICER CALCUTTA, Jan. 14. A luckv purchase was made at Benares by an officer of a British regiment. Examining ornaments of brass in a dealer’s shop in the city, the officer noticed a small statuette which appeared to be brass with glass eyes. He bought it for £l. After cleaning the statuette, he was convinced that it was valuable and took it to an expetr, who declared that it was solid gold with eyes of rose diamonds and over 1000 years old. The officer declined an offer of £10,750 for the statuette complete, but sold the diamonds for £3900. The officer is shortly going to England on leave and hopes to sell the statuette there. Meanwhile hundreds of people are flocking to the brass dealer’s shop and buying ornaments at ridiculous prices in‘ the hope of further lucky purchases.
