BENEFICIAL RAINS
EFFECT ON FARMING. T \STU BES R EFR ESH ED. Pastures throughout the Wanganui district will benefit as a result of the warm rains of Alonday and Tuesday and early yesterday morning. The rain caused the suspension of haymaking and. harvesting work throughout the district but it will be welcomed by the dairy industry and should result in the stimulation of production. Pastures throughout the district at the present time are in a greener and fresher state than is usual at this time of the year and farmers have not been troubled with the food shortages of last year. Last year, however, was an exceptionally dry season and in January pastures were mere parched and arid wastes. Speaking to a “Chronicle” reporter yesterday a farmer stated that he had cut his hay early in December and, as a result of the refreshing rains this month, indications were that he xvould be able to mow a second crop next month. A number of farmers had cut their hay just before the rain fell but as the weather had cleared he did not think that it would suffer any material damage.
