GERMANY IN THE MARKET CROSSBREDS UP 10 PERCENT. Received Jan. 15, 5.5 p.m. LONDON, Jan. 14. The January series of wool sales has opened to a linn market. | Home, French and German competition. for Merinos showed an advance of 5 per cent., and for crossbreds advances of 5 to 10 per cent, on the closing rates lor the November-December series. The offering was 9525 bales, including 3375 New Zealand, 8151 bales of Australian and New Zealand wools being sold. There was a good attendance of buyers and the olterings were a fairly good selection. Active competition camo from the home trade and the .Continent. A good clearance was effected apart from .the moderate withdrawals among the greasy Merinos owing .to firm limits. New Zealand greasy crossbred made 13H highest and 10|d average. Compared with closing prices of the last series, Merino scoured, and all greasies were 5 per cent., dearer. Crossbreds scoured, greasy, medium and coarse were 1U per cent dearer. PRIVATE ADVICES WOOL IN ACTIVE DEMAND The Bank of New Zealand, Produce Department, has received the following advice frum its London oihee under date January 14:—The sales have opened, with strong competition and large attendance or buyers. There is an active demand by all branches of the trade. Compared with the close ot last series Merinos are id to Id, fine crossbred Id, medium ami coarse crossbred Ad per lb, all higher. Buying Freely Levin and Co., Ltd., have received the following cable from, their Loudon agents, dated January 14:—The auctions opened here to-day with a large attendance of Home and Continental buyers. Keen competition; all sections of the trade are buying freely-, including the Continent. Scoured crossbreds arc in good demand. As at present arranged, the sales will close on January 28. Compared with the closing rates of last sales we quote: — Greasy Merino, best id per lb higher, average id; line halfbreds, 50-56’s, Id; extra line crossbreds, 48-50’s, id; line crossbreds, 46-48’s, bl; medium crossbreds, 4-1-46’s, 4d; coarse crossbreds, 40-44’s, id; low crossbreds, 36-40’s, Id; scoured crossbreds, Id to lid, all higher;. Animated Competition Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., ami Abraham and \\ illianir, Lid., report, having received cable advice from their London House regarding the London wool sales reading as follows: —The sales opened before an average attendance of buyers among whom competition was animated. Continental ami Bradford buyers were the. chief operators, but there was some German competition. An average of wool was offered. As compared with closing rates of the November series Merino is Ad per lb higher, line half bred Id higher, halt bred Ad higher, ami all other grades of greasy fleece wool higher, crossbred lambs are Ad lower. Scoured wool prices are 10 per cent, higher and slipes 5 per cent, higher. Australian Merino prices are from par to 5 per cent, higher. We quote the following average realisations: —Greasy Merino 60/61, yielding 48 per cent., 12Ad; greasy fine halfbred 56/58. 62 per cent., 14.p1; greasy haltbred 50/56, 68 per cent., lid; greasy three-quarterbred 48/50, 74 per cent., 9d; greasy fine crossbred 46/IS. 75 per cent., 8 bl; grea.-y medium crossbred 44/46, 75 per cent., Sd; greasy crossbred. 40/44, 76 per cent., 74(1; greasy coarse crossbred 36/40, 76 per cent., 71d; crossbred lambs 46/50, , 7 I per cent., 92d. A Good Tone Murray, Roberts and Co., Ltd., are in receipt of the following wool market cablegram from their London agents, dated January 14:—Sales have opened with a good tone; Bradfc-rd buyers principal operators; Continental buyers operating moderately. Compared with last London sale’s closing rates, greasy Merino, wool suitable for Yorkshire, advanced 5 per cent.; wool suitable for the Continent, par to 5 per cent., advance; scoured Merino par to 5 per cent, advance; crosi-brc-d greasy fine advanced, 5 to 7A per cent.; crossbred greasy medium advanced 5 to 7A per cent.; crc-ssbiod greasy coarse advanced 5 per cent.; crossbred scoured advanced 5 to 10 p«r cent. Slips crossbred, poor selection offered, insufficient to test the market. Continent Takes Merinos Dalgety and Co., Ltd., London, report January 14: To-day wool sales opened with large attendance. Average selection. Competition generally active. Continent principal operators for Merino. Slipe Offering Small The following cable has been received from the Nvw Zealand Farmers’ Co-op. Distributing Company’s London office, dated January 14:—“London wool tales opened to-day. Good attendance and competition. Prices compared with close of last series are: Merinos, greasy 5 per cent., scoured par to 5 per cent.; crossbreds, greasy line 10 per cent, medium and coarse 5 per cent., ecourcd. 7| per cent, to 10 per cent., all up. Slipes, very few offered. Quantity available, 95,100 bales.” Representative Catalogues The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., have received the following cabled advice from their London house, January 14: There was a good attendance at the opening of the sales to-day, competition by Home and Continental* buyers being active. As compared with last sale’s cloning rates, prices are higher id to Id per lb for greasy Merino. Jd to lid per lb higher for scoured cross- : bred and scoured Merino, medium, and Id per lb higher for greasy cross-bred. The opening catalogues were representative. SYDNEY WOOL SALES COMPETITION STRONG Received Jan. 15, 11.5 p.m. SYDNEY, Jan. 15. At the wool sales 12,503 bales were offered and 11.450 sold, also 961 privately. Competition was strong and values firm. Greasy Merino sold at 303 d per lb.
