SPORTS AT TAIHAPE

NEW YEAR’S DAY MEETING WANGANUI COMPETITORS DO WELL. EXCELLENT ENTRIES AND KEEN EVENTS L From Our Own Correspondent. ] TAIHAPE, Jan. 2. The Taihape Amateur Athletic Club v.-;is favoured with fine weather for its big spurts meeting, which wau held on the Taihape Domain on New Year’s Day. Competitors were present from Wanganui, Masterton, Taumarunui, Marlon, and other centres, and good fields were engaged in every event. Despite the excellent entries that were received for the sports, the attendance of the public wars not up to expectations owing, no doubt, to counter attractions, the chief of which was the Marion races. Nevertheless, the spurts were a success and everything went oft’ without a hitch. The truck was in excellent order and some good performances were recorded. The organisation of the meeting reflected great credit on the officials who were ably led by the president, Mr. C. L. Mullany, and the secretary (Mr. F. Darvill). The 100 yards handicap was won by Cairns, of Masterton, while Brandon (Wanganui), and McCaskill (Wanganui) were first to breast the tape ih the 220 and 440 respectively. Christopher (Marton) won the 880, while Beattie (Taumarunui; was first home in the mile handicap. Miss P. Chainey won the ladies' 100 yards, while Miss A. McElroy was the winner of the ladies’ 75 yards. The 120 yards hurdles resulted in a win for Hausman (Masterton) while Bourgeois (Wanganui; was first in the 440 yards hurdles. Taihape competitors failed to win any of the principal running events but “scooped the pool” in the cycling event. Taylor won the half-mile and mile cycle handicaps, while Jack Guilliard, the Taihape champion, scored a well deserved victory in the two mile cycle event from scratch. Guilliard also tied with K. Kelly for first in the three mile cycle after a thrilling finish that brought the spectators to their feet. Officials for the meeting were as follows: President, Mr. C. L. Mullany; referee, Mr.. A. M. Ryan; judges, Messrs. K. <• Onglcy, F. Ward, and F. Read; timekeepers, Messrs. H. D. Bond and J. Evans; starter, Mr. B. Somerville, call rteward, Mr. J. Graham; marksmen, Messrs. A.
