Though not among the well backed division for this coveted trophy Royal Papa’s victory was well re reived, for he is owned by a “battler/ Mr. P. Holman, of Feilding, former!} a jockey and also a trainer. In addi tion, the horseman associated with tht success of the appropriate-named win r.er was Mr. W. R. Duncan, son of Mr T. A. Duncan, who acted as host for th? Duke of Gloucester on his visit t: Hunterville twelve months ago. Royal Papa ran past Taumau at the distance but Ethiop then challenged, Royal Papa getting home by a short head. Land Tax. who had won two events at Awapuni last week, was best ba -ked in the Telegraph Handicap and won with ease. Limulus led Land Tax. Bodyline, Severe and Porotiti nut from the

' tapes, but Land Tax was soon taken tc the front and led across the top frou: Liniulus, Bodyline, Porotiti and Fulo joy. In the straight Land Tax waj always going nicely to win by twlengths from Limulus, who was <i length in front of Fulojoy. The othei four were together, a couple of lengthiback. De Trop Takes the Last. Lifeguard was favourite for the concluding event, but De Trop score*! nicely. ’ After the tapes had been broken more than once Lifeguard went out in front of De Trop and Vivienne over the early stages and there was little change to the straight.
