OTHER CURRENCY LIABILITY. NOTE ISSUE INCREASES. The weekly statement of assets aud liabilities of the Reserve Bank of New 'Zealand as at the close of business on Monday, December 23, is as follows: — Liabilities

£1,033,751 in sterling exchange, which now stands at £22,498,226. Trading banks’ deposits at £10,027,832 show a substantial increase of £1,586,443, which, taking into account the rise in sterling exchange, indicates a further purchase of London funds from the banks. Government deposits have shrunk to £4,329,923, a decrease of £725,190. The item ‘' liabilities in currencies other than New Zealand currency,” which on December 16 came in at £124,00-9, is once again shown as nil. “Other demand liabilities” at £363,158 show a decrease of £61,311. Other liabilities at £111,156 show a nominal increase. On the assets side gold remains unchanged at £2,801,733. Investments have increased by £41,316 to £1,589,079. Subsidiary coin at £195,363 shows a decrease of £4468. Other assets total £30,524, a decrease of £3186. Higher Note Issue A further substantial increase is shown in the note issue of £391,412, .the total on December 23 amounting to £10,782,856, indicative of heavy Christmas trade currency demands. There has been a progressive increase in the note issue during the last five week, and the totals for the last three j weeks are well above those of a year 'ago.
