PLAY AT WELLINGTON [ Per Free* Association. ] WELLINGTON, Dec. 30. Play in the fifth round of the chess championship was as follows: Beyer v. Gyles: Gyles accepted the queen’s bishop’s gambit and Beyer, tn efforts to win back a pawn weakened his position, for Gyles was able to exchange queens and win a knight. Beyer’s pieces were badly placed and Gyles won another piece, whereupon Beyer resigned. Burry v. Kelling: In this Cavo-Kann game Kelling made the poorer development, Burry building up a fine combination. Burry’s attack overwhelmed Kelling’s defence and the latter was checkmated on the 22nd move. Jones v. Rutherfurd: Rutherford played the Nemzovitch defence to the quen’s pawn game, but Jones obtained the better position. Later Jones launched a strong attack, causing Rutherfurd to resign. Severne v. Abbott: Abbott again adopted the Sicilian game and seemingly got an even game, concentrating on winning the centre pawn. Severne forced exchanges which left him a piece up and a forceful position. Abbott resigned. Purdy v. Baeyerfz: queen’s pawn opening adopted by Purdy was *hc Budapest, variation. Bayertz got. rhe better pawn position but failed to regain Purdy’s advanced pawn. Purdy set up a fine middle game attack which broke down Baeyertz’s defence, the latter resigning on the 38th move. Dyer v. Scott': Another queen's pawn dpening, in which Dyer seemed to work up th?, better middle game position. He failed to take his advantage and Scott, by a. strong counter-attack, forced Dyer’s resignation. ’ Minor Tournament Tn the minor tournament, Watt beat Stewart, Hardy beat Anderson, Brown beat Goldsmith. R. Christensen beat Langley, and Fairburn beat H. Christensen, Sixth Round Armstrong v. Severne; The Engl.sb opening was adopted aud Armstrong, attacking, was able to treble his rooks and queen with a stiong threat. Severne defended correctly and attacked effectively following a weak move by Armstrong, who .was forced to resign. Rutherfurd v. Purdy; This was a most interesting queen’s pawn game. Rutherfurd played a good middle game and won a pawn. He was. however, cleverly outplayed by Puidy on the end game and resigned. Baeyeitz v. Beyer; Queen’s pawn game. Very evenly played and resulted in a draw after a critical end game of a knight and four pawns against a bishop and four pawns. Dyer v. Abbott; A queen’s pawn game. The exchanges left Abbott with a pawn up, which he was able to force through to queen. Dyer iesigned. Ju the sixth round of the minor tourney, Brown beat H. Christensen, Fairburn beat Kirkwood, Goldsmith beat Ajndcrson. In the ladies’ tourney, fourth round, Mrs Shoit beat Mrs Goldsmith, Mis Abbott beat Mrs Thorpe. The position of the players at the end of the sixth session of the championship was:—Purdy 5 points, Gyles (2 unfinished, 4, Beyer 3, Burry (2) 3, Severne (1) 3, Baeycrtz v l) 2|, Erskine (2) 21, Jones (2) Abbott (1) 2, Rutherfurd 2, Scott (2) I|, Kelling 2, Armstrong K Dyer J.
