CHAMBER’S SUPPORT
LAVAL GOVERNMENT GENEVA DISAPPOINTED FUTURE OF SANCTIONS "NIGGER IN WOODPILE” Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright] Received Dec. 30, 9.40 p.m. LONDON, Dee. 30. The Manchester Guardian's Geneva correspondent says that League quarters are undisguisedly disappointed at the Chamber’s support of M. Laval, who is regarded as the “nigger in the woodpile” concerning oil sanctions. The vote is expected to give him renewed assurance in the expected attempt to prevent the extension of sanctions. League circles are distrustful of M. Laval’s assurances of France’s unswerving support for the League, as whatever France’s general attitude they believe that M. Laval personally is over-devoted to his conception of a FrancoItalian alliance and will give no more than lip service in the present crisjs.
The Guardian’s Paris correspondent, however, doubts whether M. Laval’s personal victory carried approval of his policy, and adds that the debate showed a strong movement against it, especially in publie opinion throughout France, where to-day there are few admirers of Mussolini.
