WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

MAKIRIKIRI. The December meeting of the Makirikiri Women’s Institute was well attended. Mrs. Wylds presided and an enjoyable afternoon was spent. It was decided to pay 2d per member towards sending a delegate to the Pan-Pacific Conference in July next. Mrs. Clemance was appointed convener of the hospitality scheme. It was decided to have an autumn flower show in April. Mrs. Shanks gave an interesting talk and demonstration on the artistic arrangement of flowers and posy-making. She was thanked by Mrs. Wylds and presented with a bunch of Christmas lilies. Mrs. Vercoe supplied a good competition, the winner being Mrs. Rumford. The points competitions were for a Christmas present made frdm a yard of organdie; and a pot of gooseberry jam. For the former, Mrs. Priest was first, Miss Hughes second, and Mrs. Hughes third. For the jam, Mrs. Friedrich was first, Miss Georgetti second, and Mrs. Bartrum third. It was decided to' hold the institute picnic at Kai Iwi beach on Thursday, January 9. All institute members, their husbands and friends, are invited, and cars will leave the store at 10 a.m. The committee and the hostesses for January are asked to see that everybody has a good time, and all are asked to help with the catering. Anybody wanting transport is asked to ring Mrs. Wylds.
