BOWLING

WANGANUI CENTRE CHRISTMAS TOURNAMENT POST-SECTION PLAY. With three teams qualifying for postsection play in the Wanganui Bowling Centre’s Christmas tournament, keen interest was displayed in yesterday’s play, which commenced on the St. John’s green. The rain of the previous night had made the green on the heavy side and a fall in the temperature made players retain their coats. The first game was between Boyd and Benefield. This was very even up to the 12th. head when the score was 9 —B to Boyd. On the 13th and 14th Benefield secured 2 and 1 respectively, making the board read 11—9 in his favour. On the 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th Boyd did all the scoring, securing 4,1, 3, 2—the board then reading 19— 11 to Boyd. On the remaining three heads Bendfield secured 4 points, which gave Boyd victory by 4 points. Many of the heads were of brilliant character. Probably the outstanding player was Stone, who put in some beautiful shots for Boyd.

In the Benefield-S'crivener game the former was 9 ahead on the fifth head when Scrivener obtained a full hand. On the 11th head the score stood 12-all, and on the 13th it was 14 ail. On the 14th Benefield obtained three, and on the 15th Scrivener secured a brace, the board reading 17 —16 against him. On the next three heads Benefield notched 1,2, 2, bringing the score to 22—16 to him. On each of the last three heads of the game Scrivener obtained singles, being defeated by three points. On the last head Scrivener had every chance of making a tie as he lay four on the head, but Benefield, with his last, drew in for shot. In the Scrivener-Boyd game Boyd opened with 2 and 3 on the first two heads. On the third, fourth and fifth Scrivener secured 3,2, 1, respectively. The sixth brought disaster to Boyd, as when the change-over was made he was five down on the head. With his last he tried to save, but unfortunately for himself, he was a little too strong, and trailed kitty back to another bunch of Scrivener’s and was still five down—l.l—s to Scrivener. Continuing on, Scrivener still monopolised the scoring, securing five on the next three heads—l6—s to him. On the 10th Boyd broke his spell of standing still by securing a single.—l 6—6 against him. On the 13th Boyd notched a brace—l9 —8 against him. The 15th and 16th brought two on each to Boyd —20—12 against him. On the 17th Scrivener obtained a single, while the 18th brought three to Boyd.—2l—ls against him. When the last head w’as started Boyd required six to tie or seven to win, but had to bo content with three. All through this game Boyd’s team did not produce anything like the form they did in their first game. The first game to-day will be between Boyd and Benefield, while Scrivener has a bye. All three teams have now had a loss which leaves them with one life each. Play to-day will not start until 10 R-m. Results of yesterday’s play are:— First Round. Benefield 15, v. Boyd 19. Scrivener, the bye. Second Round. Benefield 22, v. Scrivener 19. Boyd, the bye. Third Round. Scrivener 22, v. Boyd 19. Benefield, the bye. GONVILLE CLUB PROGRESSIVE PAIRS TOURNEY A successful progressive pairs tournament was held on the Gonville green on Saturday, 32 players taking part. The winers were W. Elliot (skip) and F. Davey (lead). Pairs tournaments are to be held tomorrow (New Year’s Hay) and also the following day. Play will commence at 9 a.m. each day.
