STRATFORD RACING CLUB
NEW YEAR MEETING TO-MORROW’S PROSPECTS (By “Kestrel.”) The annual meeting of the Stratford Racing Club will be held at the club’s picturesque cou>se to-morrow and Saturday, and the prospects are that the New Year’s Day fixture will be patronised by a large crowd of holidaymakers. Tne fields are large and on this roomy course all contestants should have an excellent chance. The long straight is a trifle uphill toward the finishing-post, and this provides a test of stamina not always appreciated. The totalisator at Stratford will have two pools, one being for straight-out bettors and the other for those desirous of investing with a chance of getting a 75 per cent, dividend for firs.t and a 25 per cent, for second. Most of the horses engaged were seen out at the New Plymouth meeting last Thursday and Saturday, and included is a fairly large contingent from the Auckland province. Three that may appeal among the Trial Stakes condidates are Joy Box, The Sandwichman and Kentucky Song, though Lupellus Lad is reported to Be a promising sort. On his form at Feilding Whenuakura should be the favourite for .the Douglas Handicap, though there will also be good money for Courtega and Lady Kyra (if started). Nine are down .to contest the Juvenile Handicap, in which Hamerin, Gay Talkie and Waiongona haVe the best credentials. Judging by the race for the hack trophy at New Plymouth on Saturday, the Stratford Hack Plate contest should be a good one. The for.j. horses appear to be Friesland, Tua v eahe and Onewhetu. The Ohura Hurdles will find the Taranaki winners, Soloist and Kaola, again in favour, with Ruaform likely to prove dangerous. With the Stratford Cup to be run on the second day of the meeting, interest will attach to the Malone Memorial Handicap, for which .ten made the acceptance. Silk Sox is the logical favourite, and he should be able to account for the New Plymouth winner, Lady Kyra, and Glenvane. The hacks in the Eltham Hack Handicap are a smart lot, with Tooley Street, Swift Spear and Bonny Glow likely to make most appeal. Another six-furlong hack race is the Bailway Hack Handicap, in which the minimum weight is 7.0. Silver Wings, Prince Reno and Te Hai appear to be a likely trio.
