Cultural Revival in India Fosters Good Citizenship
BOMBAY—What is known as the Bratachari movement of Bengal is making progress here. This movement is a cultural revival that has for its goal the making of good citizens capable of individual and national advancement.
“Brata” means a solemnly undertaken duty and the name “Bratachari” has been taken by a group of persons who intend to shape their ways by the systematic practice of "the five basic duties of Knowledge, Labour, Truth, Unity and Joy.” Every Bratachari is expected to strive for perfection in all spheres of activity making for good citizenship. The founder of the movement is G. 8. Dutt, a member of the Indian Civil Service. In addition to work as a government official in rural districts, Mr. Dutt hAs carried out researches into the folk songs, folk dances, and athletics of Bengal and introduced them into a number of schools. His idea is that such amusements make for clean, cheerful and healthy living. Sir John Anderson, Governor of Bengal, has accepted the patronship-in-chief Of the movement, and Dr. Rabindranath Tagore, Bengal’s leading poet and philosopher, is associating himself with it.
