The ancient port of Poole is arranging a display of its old charters and seals as a way of celebrating the centenary of the passing of the Municipal Corporations Act. Nearly a thousand years ago Prince Canute entered Poole harbour. William Longspee. collecting revenue to go to the Holy Land, signed the town’s first Charter of Privileges in 1248. receiving 70 marks from the town’s treasury. According to this charter Poole was a borough “beyond the time of legal memory. ” Elizabeth's charter, dated 1568, set out that Poole “for ever shall be named, stiled and called the County of the Town of Poole, distinct and separate from the County of Dorset.”
