NEW YEAR’S DAY SPORTS. A most attractive programme Las been arranged for the big sports meeting to be ireld on the Taihape Domain on New Year’cs Day, under the auspices c-f the Taihape Amateur Athletic Club. Running, cycling, and field events, chilI dren’s racs», and novelty events will be field, and competition will no doubt be very keen. There will be a flannel dance in the Town Hall on the night of the sports. GENERAL NEWS. Two weddings were celebrated in Taihape on Boxing Day, one being held i< the morning, and the other in the afternoon. Miss Dulcie Sexton and Mr. W. Grove were married in the morning, while Miss Doris Bosher and Mr. B. Williams were wedded in the afternoon. Miss Dorothy Overton and Mr. V. W. Budding were married last Monday. A report of these wedding ceremonies will be published . on the Women’s page in the “Chronicle” this week. The chief attraction in Taihape on New Year’s Eve will be the U.S.A. grand carnival dance which will be held in the Town Hall. Special novelty evtjnte will be included in the programme and it is anticipated that a large number of patrons will be present to see the- Old Year out and the New Year in amid scenes of revelry. Gable swasnbuckles through the gold camps, a picturesque prospector ready to stake his fortune on the flip of a coin. His codis the code c-f the frontics—a rough but honest variation of the “golden rule.” Into his life comes Loretta Young, a San Francisco socialist. Thrown together on the trial, they begin by hating each other, he detesting her code, she not understanding his. Under the spell of the Arctic their differences diminish, and a romance ensues. Their close companion is “Buck the huge St. Bernard in whom Jack London vested the symbolical story. William Wellman directed the production which was filmed on the rugged, remote heights of Mount Baker Washington. Frank Couroy, Reginald Owen, Katherine de MiUe, Sydney Toler, and

the doc “Buck” are also prominent in the east of this United Artist picture.
