FIRE VERSUS FAITH

NEGROES PERISH IN FLAMES Received Dec. 29, 7.25 p.m. NEW YORK, Dec. 28. Three followers of Father Divine, leader of a negro religious cult, were burned to death in a fire in the twostorey house they occupied at Newark, New' Jersey. They refused to be rescued by ordinary means, insisting that prayer and faith in their leader would save them. The fire was discovered by a lorry driver, who backed a high vehicle within a few feet of a second-storey window. Escape would have been easy. He begged the negroes to jump to the lorry, but they answered only with hysterically screamed prayers and were soon enveloped by the flames.
