Receipts for the week ended December 21, were swollen by an exceptionally large payment on account of estate duty, and the total receipts under this head for the financial year to date are £63,410,000, as compared with £58,515,000 for the same period of the previous year. i Among other revenue items, income 'tax has yielded £75,618,000, or over £4,000,900 more than for the same period of last year, and Customs and excise £22?,355,000, or an increase of nearly £9,000,000 compared with last year.

Late Shopping Night. The same arrangements as were in force last week will be observed by retail firms in Wanganui over the holiday period this week. Shops will remain open, until ten o’clock to morrow night, (New Year’s Eve) and will be closed on Wednesday, (New Year’s Day) and Thursday. There will bo no late night on Friday. Good Sailing Wind. Saturday’s strong westerly wind was ideal for yachting and a number ol boats from the Wanganui Sailing Club made good use of the conditions pre vailing in the afternc-on. A race was organised and some thrilling sport took place, the little craft attaining almost incredible speeds when running before the wind. One vessel, the Eve, capsized while taking part in the race’ She was speedily righted by her crew and made a good fight to finish third, a creditable performance under the circumstances. The winning boat was the Spray, followed by the Neptune. Saturday wan- easily the best day experienced by the club since Ihe new season opened. The winds have unfortunately been very light of a Saturday afternoon, and several races have been held under difficulty. During the holiday season the Wanganui River has become a favourable resort for keen young yachtsmen.
