Captain A. H. L. Sugden, area officer at Napier, accompanied by his wife and family, sailed from Auckland by the Taniui on Sunday for England, where he will undergo a special training ccurse.
Air H. Af. Caselberg, Hawera branch manager of the Farmers’ Co-op., has been appointed supervising valuer in the North Island for the M Ccipoiation. He assumes his duties :*! end of Februuy.
Air. G. J. E. Hunter, AI.Se., A.1.C., until recently a member of the bactcr ological staff of the Otago University School, has taken up an appointment with the Department of S i-■•ntitle and Industrial Research iu the North Island.
Superintendent D. J. Cummings, formerly superintendent of police at Chi?>.tthurch has taken up the position of superintendent of police in Wellington, to which he was recently appointed on the retirement of Superintendent A. T. Emerson.
Professor R. <S. Stevens, of the chair of corporation and equity law at Cornell University, U.S.A., accompanied by his wife and son, arrived at Wellington on Alonday by the Union liner Monowai from Australia. They are on a month’s holiday visit to New Zealand.
Cr J. Robertson, the Deputy-Mayor, and secretary of the Wanganui Waterside Workers’ Union, is visiting Christchurch and is representing the Wanganui watersiders at the biennial conference of the federation which is being held at Lyttelton.
Air. J. L. Schmitt, general manager of the New Zealand Tourist Department, returned on the Monowai an Monday from a private visit to Sydney. He was accompanied by Mrs. Schmitt. Aliss P. Schmitt, and Master G. Schmitt, who have been on. holiday in Australia.
Dr. Elizabeth Gunn, medical inspector for the Wanganui .Education Board, has been visiting the Alain Trunk area and Palmerston North to inspect candidates for the teaching profession. Dr. Gunn is now inspecting candidates from the Wanganui Girls’ College and the Wanganui Technical College.
Mr. W. C. Christie, who has been manager of the Wanganui branch of the Bank of New South Wales for the past nine years, is retiring at the end of the present year. He will be succeeded by Mr. R. J. AfcDonald, who is at present manager of the bank’s Taumarunui branch. Air. AfcDonald is an old Wanganui boy and is well known in the city.
AD. H. W. Essex, has been appointed New Zealand traffic agent f oi the Canadian Pacific Railways and will have his headquarters at Auckland. Air. Essex joined the staff uf the company at London, l2 years ago, a-uo was appointed passenger manager in New Zealand in 1926. The appointment was made consequent upon the re-
tirement of Mr. J. Sea Iter, who has been traffic manager for Australia and New. Zealand with headquarters Air. N. R. EtcMarran has been appointed traffic manager for Austral. 3.
