WRESTLING AT MARTON

SPECTACULAR BOUT ELLIOT AND ANDRESEN DRAW There was a good attendance cf wrestling fans at the Civic Theatre, Marton, on the occasion of the third wrestling tourney of the season, under the auspices of the Marten Wrestling Club. On account of Glenn Wade being unable to fulfil his engagement with King Elliot, the club arranged for iris place to be taken by Ole Andresen (Sweden). The amateur bouts were very interesting and the contestants were evenly matched. The main bout was full of thrills from start to finish, and the clever manner in which belli wrestlers countered holds appealed to the pub lie. The tourney was capably conducted by the officials, c-f the club and Air. R. Whittaker (L’tiku) acted as referee. Amateur Bouts. T. Waldron 11.4, Rata, v. R. Walker- , .11.4, Dannevirkc. —After a few preliminaries Waldron secuied a hammerlock and face bar and then a twisted headlock, the gong saving 'Walker. Waldron assumed the aggressor and secured a headlock, but Walker threw Waldron assumed the aggresseve and final round, Waldrc-n gained a headlock but Walker broke free and the bout ended without a fall. The contest was awarded to Waldron. A. Patterson 10.0, Dannevirkc v. L. A are 10.0 Wanganui.—Patterson opened with a body scissc-rs on Vare but Vare countered with a twisted, headlock, but. th© .gong saved Patterson when a fall was almost certain. It was an interesting round. \ are secured a fall al the beginning of the second round with a half Nelson. Vare secured a second fall in the final round after a few seconds with a body press. C. Vernon 10.12, Wanganui v. G. Harrington 10.6, Dannevirkc. —The opening round was very interesting, the contestants sparring for a hold without avail. The second round was spectacular, but neither could obtain his objective. In the final round Harrington secured a toe hold, but Vernon crawled through the ropes. It was a very interesting bout from the public’s point of view, and the referee- declared a draw. R. Jones .10.9, Wanganui, v. C. Matson 10.10 Wanganui.—Matson early secured a toe hoid which Jones countered with a similar hold. Jones got another toe hold from whiefi he freed himself, and retaliated. A real good round with Matson in difficulty when the gong sounded. Th-e second round was full of interest, both men giving a good exhibition of wrestling holds. In the final Matson tried a hack loop slam but Matson went through Hie ropes and he took the count for 11. Matson retaliated with an elbow jolt in the solar plexus and both took tire count on the mat. Matson was awarded the decision. The Star Bout. The star bout was between King Jdlliot .15.0, Wanganui, and Ole Andresen 15.4, Sweden. —After a few preliminaries Elliot secured a Boston crab but Andresen cleverly eluded a fall. Andresen obtained an arm stretch but Elliot countered With a half crucifix. Andresen then had a full body 7 scissors and a face bar v.’hcn the g'- n g sounded. The second round opened spectacularly with flying tackles, both men going through the ropes. Elliot then got Andresen in an arm scissors, which he cleverly broke. Andresen obtained a twisted headlock hut Elliot countered with a headlock and applied a head scissors. Andresen tried for a hammerlock and obtained a head chancery applied with the logs, but Elliot escaped. Elliot opened the next round with a head scissors and a wristlock. Both men tried for flying tackles. Elliot connected with a drop kick and with a body press secured a fall. Elliot opened the next round with a head scissors and a wristlock.
