Discovery of Tasmania.

The 293rd. anniversary of the discovery of Tasmania by the great Dutch navigator, Abel Tasmau. took place last week. Tasman sailed from Batavia on .August 14, .1642, and sighted the land now known as Tasmania oil November 24. He coasted along the southern shores, and then, running up Storm Bay, anchored in Frederick Henry’s Bay, on the cast coast, on December 1. There he hoisted the Dutch flag. In the eighteenth century the island was visited by French and English explorers, including Captain Cook, and in 1803 Lieutenant Bowen was sent there by the Governor of New South Wales to form a settlement Nemeat to Sail. After a stay of several days in port at Castlecliff, discharging sulphur from Port Muroran (Japan), the 5101-ton steamer Nemea was to have sailed early this morning for AVhyalla, in the Spencer Gulf, South Australia. Considerable interest has been taken in the vessel, particularly during the weekend. On Saturday and Sunday, large numbers of people visited the Nemea and were hospitably received by the Greek officers, and crew. The steamer ’s master, Captain Antonia Cacoyannis, ■who is a keen philatelist, has received several visits from stamp collectors anxious to see his specimens.
