WANGANUI SEAT

CANDIDATES AT REGENT PARTY POLICIES OUTLINED TWO SPEAKERS HECKLED Tlhe four political aspirants for the .Wanganui 'seat at the General Elections this week, Messrs. N. R. Bain (National Government), W. A. Veiteh, M.P. (Democrat), J. B. Cotterill (Labour) and J. T. Hogan (Liberal), briefly outlined the salient features of their parties' policies from the stage of the Regent Theatre on Saturday night before a crowded house. The Mayor of Wanganui, Mr. W. J. Rogers, presided. Mr. N. R. Bain was the first speaker but was subjected to considerable heckling and the chairman was obliged to appeal to the audience for a fair hearing. Mr. Bain continued .without interruption for several minutes but the interjections commenced again and continued to the end of the address. The heckling was from a small section of the audience but was persistent. Before the second speaker, Mr. W. A. Veitch, M.P., commenced his address the chairman again appealed to the audience to extend a fair hearing to the candidates. “I have my own political views but I can restrain them,” said Mr. Rogers. Mr. Veitch was extended a fair hearing, but there were frequent interjections which he ignored. Mr. J. B. Cotterill followed Mr. Veitch and was given an attentive hearing. Many of his remarks were punctuated with applause. The last speaker was Mr. Hogan, who was also given an attentive hearing and, like Mr. Cotterill, was applauded for many of his statements. Each of the four candidates was charged a guinea platform fee, which the management of the theatre is donating to the Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund. MR. W. A. VEITCH Mr. W. A. Veitch, Democrat candidate, will address the electors to-night (Monday) at 8 o’clock in St. Andrew’s Schoolroom, corner Glasgow and Gloucester Street, when he will give to the electors a message from the Democrat Party of a plan for the immediate and future prosperity for the electors of this Dominion. Go and hear him.
