MAORI NAMES
- - .■> NEW U.S.S, COMPANY SHIPS. [ Per Frees Association. ] WELLINGTON, Nov. 12. In accordance with traditional practice the Union Steam Ship .Company has chosen Alaori names for the three ships now being constructed for delivery next year. The 15,000-ton liner for the trans-Tasman service will be named Awatea, meaning “Broad Daylight.” For the 39U0-ton motor-sing designed for the carriage of fresh fruit in the Auckland-Fiji Tonga-Samoa trade, the nam-e ALatua, meaning “Par ent,” has been selected. The motorship of 2400 tons for the intercolonial cargo trade will be called Kauri, a name borne for many years by a former cargo steamer of the company.
