WANGANUI ASSOCIATION SENIOR ®UELD FINAL OLD BOYS BEAT HINEMOA OJd Boys and Hinemoa met on Saturday in the Senior Shield final, and the game resulted in a win for the former by 2 goals to 1. The weather conditions were perfect, but the ground was rough and this inili tated to some extent against good play. The match drew quite a large number of spectators and they were treated to a thrilling exhibition of hockey from start to finish. The game was played in the best of spirits. There was far too much “slogging,’’ especially in tue second hali. The teams tooic the lield as follow: OJd Boys.—O’Brien, L. Mclntyre, Reese, Russell, Dover, Cairncross, Tippens, Moosman, B. Mclntyre (captain), E. Wallace and N. Smith. Hinemoa.—Allen, Breed, Young, Baker, Chisholm, Bromley, Pull, McGrath, L. Stewart (captain), Cameron [and C. Sherriff. From the opening bully Old Boys attacked strongly for a time, but could find no weakness in the defence. Up-and-down play was then witnessed. From a throw-in, Pull centred from the right wing, and Cameron flashed in to send in a hot one, which completely beat the goalie.—Hinemoa J, Old Boys nil. mne.i.oa initiated a dangerous attack, but this was well cieared by Reese with a .strong hit, which in turn put Old Boys in a good position to score, but Young was just a little too quick for Mclntyre. Hinemoa again pressed and a good chance to score was spoiled by C. Sherriff being off side. Hinemoa conceded a penalty corner, which B. Mclntyre stopped well and sent in a hard one, but Breed saved nicely. Old Boys were now pressing hard. Tippens looked dangerous in a left-wing attack, but he fumbled his shot and Hinemoa conceded a penalty corner, which was well cleared. Hinemoa obstructed in the circle and a penalty corner was well stopped by Allen, and a return shot was brilliantly saved by Breed. Old Boys were not to be denied, however, and a left wing attack saw Tippens centre nicely to Mslntyre, who sent in a hot shot, which put his side on even terms with Hinemoa. —Hinemoa 1, Old Bovs 1.

Old Boys renewed the attack and Mclntyre, in taking shot, lost his balance. This gave the goalie time to clear. Stewart went fast down the centre of the field to the circle, where he essayed a shot, which was well cleared. Pull came iu and had another try, but his shot went wide. The Hinemoa forwards made a concerted rush into the Old Boys circle and a shot was neatly saved by O’Brian speculating v> itli his stock. A very close call for Old Boys. Old Boys came again and from a penalty corner B. Mclntyre received and sent in a hot one, but Allen saved nicely. Another penalty corner was conceded, but this time Mclntyre infringed and Hinemoa were awarded a free hit. A good deal of up-and-down play then followed, with the odds in favour of Old Boys. Allen was then responsible for saving a hot attack by E. Wallace. Hinemoa had another good chance to score when Rees gave sticks just outside his circle, but the defence was too sound. Half-time was then called, with the honours even,—Hinemoa J, Old Bovs 1.

Hinemoa attacked right from the commencement of the second spell and L. Mclntyre obstructed Cameron. From the resultant penalty corner Old Boys cleared. Pull came in again, but gave sticks, when he sent in a hot one. The attack then moved to the Hinemoa circle, where Breed gave sticks, but the resulting penalty corner was well cleared. Hinemoa then attacked, and .Sherrill had a shot from an awkward angle, but this went wide. Play was very lively at this stage and there was plenty of hard hitting, which spoiled the game to a certain extent. Hinemoa initiated a central attack, in which

Stewart was prominent. He carried the ball up to the goalie, who cleverly stopped hin> and placed the ball in the net, but «e was caught and a free hit to Old Boys relieved the tension. Young saved two dangerous situations with well- placed long hits. Pull went fast down the left wing and centred bea itifully to Stewart, whose shot hit the side of the net. B. McIntyre sent a good pass out to Tippens at half-way. and the latter went fast down the right w'ing and centred right across the goal-mouth. E. Wallace recovered it and centred back. Young slopped it, but it rolled past him and Mclntyre was in like a flash to net in his characteristic style.—Old Boys 2, Hinemoa 1. Hinemoa tried desperately to even the score and a hot shot by C. Sherrill was cleverly cleared by ussell. A penalty corner followed, but Stewart gave sticks. An inter change of hard aitting followed. In saving attack jv Old Boys, Aden gave sticks, but the resultant penalty corner was well cieareu. nine was called shortly afterwards. —Old Boys 2, Hinemoa 1. The game was controlled L v Messrs. L. R. Spurdie and 0. A. Condic. For Hinemoa Young, at left fullback, gave a finished display and was easily the best back on the held. Broinity, at Juh i.uJi, also put in some good solid work. Some of his roll-ins were poorly executed, however. All the forwards worked well, but Stewart and Pull were the most prominent. Reese played a good game for Old Boys at left full-back and his hiding was much cleaner. •Cairncross was the most prominent half. B. Mclntyre was the outstanding forward for Ohl Boys and was the real brains of the Old Boys team. Tippens played a much better game on the rignt wing and the goals scored were from his centring shots. E. Wallace would have done better had he gone for his man. The score fairly indicates the respective merits of the two teams. Noxt Saturday the Wanganui representatives are to play Wairarapa at. Carterton and this will definitely wind up the hockey season as far as the Wanganui Association is concerned. Y.M.C.A. v. MASTERTON STAGS Y.M.C.A. were unsuccessful in their game against the Masterton Stags for the Y.M.C.A. Shield on Saturday at Masterton. The scores were: Stags 3, Y.M.C.A. J.
