“KESTREL"

By

WELL-BACKED WINNERS OTAKI SPRING MEETING GAY BOY’S LING MEMORIAL BODYLINE AND GOLD CURE. THE IMAGE SPRINGS SURPRISE. (By “Kestrel.”) Ideal weather conditions assisted the Otaki Maori Racing Club on Saturday to register success for the spring race meeting, and the bright sunshine, assisted by the success of well-backed contestants, enabled the club to emerge with an increased totalisator turnover. During the day the machine handled £7227 10s, compared with £6202 10s on the Saturday, the second day of the 1934 spring meeting. The track proved in good order and the going was very fast. The principal event, the Ling Memorial Stakes, was won by Gay Boy, whose success was anticipated by the general public, for the Colossus colt had run an honest race at Foxton and has been very consistent. Sanguine King was second and the Trenthamowned Sunee a close third. The open sprint, like the Ling Memorial, drew but five runners, and the favourites figured in the finish, Bodjline winning nicely from the bet-ter-backed Hunting Lodge. Pladie, who finished fast, should not be long winning.

The other open event, the Hema Te Ao Handicap, run over seven furlongs, resulted in the downfall of the hot favourite, Limulus, who finished in third place behind Gold Cure and Walton Park. Gold Cure, who was making his second appearance of the day, after falling in the hurdle race, led from end to end. The hurdle race resulted in a chapter of accidents, only four of the five starters finishing. Gold Cure and Arctic Star, the favourites, were among tne casualties, but it appeared as if Arctic Star was the proverbial “good thiug beaten, for he was brought down by a fallen horse. Spender, when about to take the lead at the last hurdle. The Image, owned by Mr. F. Bristol, of Wanganui, returned the best dividend of the day when she scored in the Puhi Maiden Plate, defeating the wellbacked pair, Entheos and Going Gay. Though none of the riders who were on the horses that fell in the hurdle race appeared to be seriously injured, Carroll, who was on Spender, had been kicked in the back and was later taken to hospital for observation.

Fate of the Favourites. Backers started off badly, for in the Kapiti Hack Hurdles the well-backed Arctic Star and Gold Cure, separated by only £2 in the betting pool, came to grief, leaving Red Sun to spring a mild surprise on his connections. Gold Cure and Karangapai showed the way past the stands the first time, with Spender and Kia Tina next, clear of Royal Papa and Nova Scotia, Arctic Star following after a gap. Gold Cure came to grief at the five furlongs, and Kia Tina fell over him. Karangapai and Spender were disputing the lead three furlongs from home, clear of Battleground, Arctic Star and Red Sun, but Arctic Star ran up behind Spender as they entered the straight. Spender crashed at the last hurdle, and Arctic Star also fell in trying to avoid him. This left Karangapai, Battleground and Red Sun to fight out the finish, and Red Sun came through to win by a long head from Battleground, with Karangapai two lengths tack. Royal Peak was the only other to finish, Nova Scotia having been pulled up at the last fence. Wanganui Candidate Wins. Going Gay carried £3O more than Entheos in the Puhi Maiden Plate, the pair carrying more than half the investments, but the winner turned up in the Wanganui-owned and trained The Image, whose supporters got a doublefigure dividend. Going Gay, Surprise Item, Entheos. Count Roussillon and Middle was the early order, Lacey and Myriam being badly away. Into the straight Going Gay was followed by Surprise Item, Entheos, Middle and The ’lmage, the last-named coming with a late challenge after Entheos had taken charge at the distance. After a brief effort Entheos was headed. The Image winning by half a length. Going Gay was three lengths away, with Myriam fourth, and Middle. Hunting Scene and Count Roussillon next.

Round Score Decisively. The Katihiku Hack Handicap was a good betting race, with only £46 sep a rating Round Score, Dorado and Finnesko, the eventual placegetters. Finnesko, Dorado, Round Score and Dampier were the early leaders, but Round Score was allowed to drop back to last at the half-mile. Finnesko turned for home clear of Garter Red. Royal King, Dorado, Dampier and Treasure Hunt, but once straightened up Round Score came fast on the outside to win, going away, by a good length, Finnesko beating Dorado by a neck for the second dividend. Garter Red and Treasure Hunt were next. Gay Boy’s Popular Win. The defections of Ruri, Chief Marionette, Sporting Song and Dorado left a field of five for the Ling Memorial Stakes, and Gay Boy, favourite in a good pool, scored a popular win. Going out of the straight. Sanguine King, Sunee, Gay Boy, Eminent and Miladi were racing at length intervals, but Sunee ran to the front and was .Rifled by Gay Boy at the five furlongs, with Sanguine King following. Thus they ran to the straight entrance, where Gay Boy drew clear and won by two lengths. Sanguine King hung on to get the second dividend, a head in front of Sunee, with Eminent a couple of lengths back. Another Favourite Scores. Oratory, State Bank and Scooter were missing from the Pahiko Hack Handicap field, and the public were right in selecting State Bank. Otauru King, Sweet Muoic, and Lorelie were together in the lead when

they hail settled down, with Vinco. Round Up and Consummation next. On the home turn Sweet Music was clear or Otauru King and Lorclle, with Vinco next and Consummation still well back. Over the final stages Consummation came through but failed by a length and a-half to catch Sweet Music. Two lengths back was Vinco, just in front, of Otauru King, Golden Enterprise and Round Up. Bodyline Again. Hunting Lodge carried £25 more than Bodyline in the Waitawa Handicap but they finished iu the reverse order. Bodyline jumped out iu front of Hunting Lodge, Lord Moutoa and Beau Gallante, but the last-named soon joined Bodyline in the lead, Hunting Lodge dropping back. Turning into the straight Bodyline was just iu front of Beau Gallante, with Hunting Lodge moving up again. Over the final stages Bodyliue went on with it and won by a length and a-quarter from Hunting Lodge, who got second money a head in front of the fast-finishing Pladie.| There was a gap of some lengths to Beau Gallante. One for Confiscation. Taumau carried half as much asain as Confiscation and Chaste in the Taumanuka Hack Handicap, but the favourite finished out of a place, the other pair returning the dividends. Running into the back stretch Manawatu, Petrarch, Confiscation, Earl Colossus, Chaste, Treasure Hunt and Taumau was the order, and there was little change till after they had passed the half-mile. Manawatu was still in front crossing the top, where he was followed by Petrarch, Treasure Hunt, Confiscation and Earl Colossus, with Chaste nad Taumau at the rear. Once the judge was sighted Confiscation came through to win with the greatest of ease by thre lengths from Chaste, who beat Treasure Hunt by a length and a-half. Manawatu was fourth and Earl Colossus and Petrarch followed. Gold Cure Makes Amends. Limulus was a hot favourite for the concluding event, but Gold Cure made amends for his hurdles failure to win decisively. Gold Cure jumped to the front at barrier-rise and piloted Aiguille, Limulus, Lady Spy. Grand Jury and Walton Park along the back. Turning for home Limulus had run up behind Gold Cure, and Lady Spy and Aiguille were next, but Gold Cure went on with it and won by a length from the fastfinishing Walton Park, who beat Limulus by a length. Aiguille was next, well clear of Grand Jury and Lady Spy. Details of results are:—
