WANGANUI AMATEURS ATHLETIC AND CYCLING CLUB. b I.AbUN ’b ANNU AL REPORT. The annual meeting of members of the Wanganui A.ii«uur Athieac and vyciing Uiuu v. ill be held on Munday evening, bcptcmbur «jU. Xun>...ng is tne annual report to be pitoeuiea io mumucis:— 'ihe tunip.eiiou oi the 3Sth year ol the \>ang..nui Amateur Abileuc and Cycling Cino's activities finds the cluu uuh an liuiixe mumuersaip u-f 00. \\ mle tne past season lias not. seen tne finances 01 tue club strengthened it Jia:, nu\erlhelcss, been a \u*y successful one iruni nmny points 01 view, and uh the increased meinbersiiip wnicli is confidently ’expected, tnis season should piuve even more sucue&slui than tne past one. bub-Cuiiire Cnampionsliips. These were held in Taifiape and ultliougj tne meeting was splenuidJy conducted by tlve ohicials oi the Tuihape Cluu, they were not a success from cither a fin ancial or spectacular point of view. Il would appear that wilii the very poor support bxiich is accorded these championships, tne expenses of sending teams lo compete could well be spnic in other ways more beneficial to the sport. The club were again successful in retaining the sub-centre banner. Centre Championships.—A team mainly from our club competed at the centre championships held at Eitliam. As tile Palmerston North sub-centre was not represented the contest resolved ilscli into-a competition mainly between the Wanganui Chub and the Taranaki provime. It is time the rules ot the competition were revised and the competition made an inter-club event. The team as a whole performed excellently ami our congratulations are extended to E. It. G. Sucere on his fine performance in the shut put, in whicn event he bettered the existing record by a considerable margin. N.Z. Athletic Championships.—These were conducted at Wanganui on Cook's Gardens by the West Coast Centre. As so much has been written of these championships it would be as well torefrain from comment here.

West Coast Cycling Championships. —These were conducted by our club after the N.Z. athletic championships were held here, ami were in every way a success, the conduct of this meeting being the subject of favourable comment by lollo'wers of the game. The past season marked the change from the old championship distances of half, one and three miles to the distances which are competed for at the Olympic Games, and much interest was occa-

sioned by these new competitions. The cyclists from the Wanganui Club comprised the bulk of the competitors and some excellent races were witnessed.

N.Z. Cycling Championships.—These were held at i’etone and the club was represented by Wade, Orlowski and Hansen. Wade was successful in winning the 1600 metres sprint after some excellent riding. Orlowski also performed creditably and shows promise of becoming an outstanding cyclist. Should Wade retain his form this season he stands an excellent chance of representing New Zealand at the Olympic Games.

The club has great hopes of the N.Z. cycling championships being al lotted to \\ anganui this coming sea

later-club Competitions.—The triangular contests were continued with Kiwi and Wellington Clubs during the season, one series being held at Wellington and the return series at anganui. Owing to the difficulty found in correctly handicapping the various competitors from the three clubs, it has been suggested that all ra c <s in future be scrulcn races and the various competitors gradeu. ihis sugges-tiu-a will ue given consideration during the forthcoming season and it is likCij lo be adopted. In the inter-club competitions the cluu retained the Bramncll Cup and annexed the baunders Memorial Aiedaliions. Winners of tropaies during the season yre:— Bruen Cup. —L. Burgess. Marshall Cup. —E. As disclosed by the bal-an'e-Miect the finances g-. the c.uu have been subjected to a severe diain during tae past season. 1/uiing the coming season the finances of the ciub will have to be carefully husbanded and individual members can help their committee in this i’espe<-t. by the prompt p:i' iiu iit of subscriptions. Many items of expenditure last year will not recur during the coming sea sun, an<l this will help the position t” sonic extent. Conclusion.- We desire to evlend our thanks to all those whu have taken an

active interest in actixilirs during the pa.-t season. Al present indications am that the number of competitors wid be considerably increased (luring the com ing season by recruits from the I'o,l- - clubs and the harrier clubs. Sliouhi the suggestion of graded scratch races be adopted, great benefit should be »|e rived from these races by the indivi dual runners. All things taken into consideration the coming season slu ild prove to be a highly successful one.
