CONFLICT OF EVIDENCE

AN INQUEST ADJOURNED. | Per Press Association. J AUCKLAND, Sept. 26. Conflict of evidence developed, to-day at the resumed inquest on Norman Burgess, aged 22, who died under an anaesthetic in the Auckland Hospital on .August 19. The father and brother both swore that deceased’s tongue had been excised from his mouth before the postmortem. but the anaesthetist gave evidence that it had been done, at the post-mortem examination. The father also alleged that although he had oh jected to the post-mortem being held he had not been notified when it was arranged so that he might attend. Dr. Bridgman, who performed ihe operation, said that it was for an oh structiou to the nose and also the tonsils. About fifteen minutes after commencing, th® patient suddenly stop ped breathing. No operation had been done on the throat. Replying to Mr. Sullivan, who appeared for the relatives, witness could not explain the suggestion that, ihe tongue had been excised. Replying to the coroner, witness said that deceased's heart, which the post mortem had disclosed, weighed 20 ounces, was the biggest he could recollect. The coroner said that in view of J ihe matters raised he would adjourn i the inquest until October 2.
