REPRESENTATIVE MATCH TAIHAPE AND WANGANUI
FAST GAME RESULTS IN HOME TEAM WINNING The Taihape men’s representative hockey team played a short-notice match against the Wanganui representatives on Gonville Park yesterday afternoon in beautifully fine weather. The game was very evenly contested and was played at a very fast pace and ended in a win for Wanganui by 2 goals to 1. The following were the teams: — Taihape.—Palmer Rolfe, Dick, Sheath, Hickman (captain), Atkins, McLennan, Bray, K. Robinson, W. Robinson, F. Treadwell. Wanganui.—N. Hughes, G. Young, Myers, Bromley, Chisholm, S. Hughes (captain). L. Stewart, Gurney, Howatson, E. Wallace and Tippens. Taihape opened the attack but were soon sent back and Stewart went down fast on the right wing and centred to Gurney, who fumbled a nice chance. Howatson had a hard shot, but it went a shade wide. He took a nice hit from a penalty corner, but the defence was too thick and another from a long corner which nearly found the net. Taihape pressed for a time and Bromley passed across his own goal. K. Robinson was in like a flash and sent in a terrific shot to open Taihape’s account. Taihape conceded a penalty corner but this was well cleared. Stewart had a nice run clown the wing and centred to Howatson who had a shot, but this went wide. Tippens then had a long shot from the left which also went wide. Two penalty corners were conceded by Taihape and Howatson’s very hot shots were cleared nicely. Wanganui continued to attack and Howatson had another not shot, which goalie stopped. Wallace tried to flick his return but the goalie again saved. Tippens had another shot and this was also well saved by the Taihape goalie. Up and down play then was the order Wanganui pressed and Taihape conceded a penalty corner. Howatson received nicely on his stick and sent In a high one to the top of the net—a glorious shot. Half-time came with Taihape attacking and with honours even at 1-all.
Taihape renewed the attack in tLa second half, but Wanganui cleared to send Howatson away. He had a hard shot but was unbalanced and the goalie intercepted. Wanganui had another good chance, but were too slow to take the opportunities. Taihape then kept Wanganui very busy. Bray had a shot but it went a little wide. They continued to press and a scoop shot created a dangerous position for Wanganui, but Hughes, in goal, saved the situation. Wanganui pressed for a time, but the visitors were not to be denied and came again and only the stout defence of Young and Bromley saved them. Bray ran strongly up the right wing and took? the ball to the circle, but fumbled his shot. Wallace secured and a fast run to the circle saw the goalie stop, but a penalty corner was conceded. Howatson again received this and sent in another beautiful shot, thus putting Wanganui in the lead. Taihape lost a wonderful chance to score in a practically open goal through off-side play. Taihape certainly had Wanganui well tied up at this stage and some very hot play was witnessed in and around the circle, but Taihape could not quite finish off their movements. However, one of their forwards found the net, but in doing so unfortunately gave sticks. The game ended shortly afterwards with Taihape attacking vigorously. Wanganui 2, Taihape 1.
Wanganui certainly had f:he better of the game in the first half, but Taihape pressed more in the second and were unfortunate in not making the game a draw. For Taihape Dick and Atkins were safe, but their outstanding back was Hickman at centre-half. Bray and K. Robinson were the pick of the for wards.
Young, at full-back, played a won derful game at right full-back and saved his side time and time again. Bromley played one of his best games this season. Howatson was the outstanding forward and his penally corner hits were a revelation. Stewart was also good on ihe wing and out[.hied his opponents time and again. Gurney and Wallace did not show up to advantage and Tippins d’d not appear to be comfortable on the le f * wing, being frequently beaten for the ba’l.
The game was ably .;o itrf.lled -by Metsrs F. Reece and L. B. hLu'd'e. After the notch the visitors were entertained to a dinner at the Ritz.
