GENERAL NEWS The anual bazaar and bulb show in connection with St. Margaret’s Anglican Church will be held in the Town Hall next Wednesday, October 2. Particulars will be advertised. Residents of 'Taihape will be interested to learn that Miss Elaine Hamill, daughter of Mr, and Mrs. J. E. Hamill, of Kiwi Road, Taihape, is playing the feminine lead in a dramatic play entitled “The Shining Hour,” which is now showing at Melbourne under the direction of J. C. Williamson and Co., Ltd. The New Zealand Free Lance has the following to say about Miss Hamill: “The Shining Hour” is a play well named for our young Taihape actress, Elaine Hamill. Her debut as the heroine, Mariella Linden, in the play’s Australian at Melbourne has been acclaimed by the ciitics. The play, described as engrossing, is about an eddy of passion in a calm old Yorkshire home and a woman who casts a tragic spell on the whole family. Miss Hamill has the role of this Lorelei and of her performance the critic of the Argus writes: “In entrusting the exacting rede of Mariella, upon whom the real burden of bringing the play to a convincing denouement rests, to an actress of the limited experience of Miss Hamill, a considerable risk was taken. It was a risk, however, that proved justifiable. Miss Hamill has all the natural gifts required for such a part —beauty, grace, and charm of personality. It requires also, however, a quick perception of interpretative nuances, a sense of restraint that will safeguard the dramatic values of situations that might easily become melodramUie. The fashion in which Miss Hanrli meets these demands could not be due entirely to skilful production. She has begun her career in drama amazingly well

GOLF NOTES The Waimarino Golf Club will visit Taihape during the coming week-end. It is anticipated that 15 men and the same number of ladies will be making the trip. The Taihape Club has arranged with Mrs. Lelievre to do the catering in connection with morning and afternoon tea and luncheon, and there will therefore be no necessity for Taihape players to provide their own lunch. PERSONAL The friends of Mr. J. AL Keegan, of Wellington, formerly of Taihape, will regret to learn that owing to the poor state of his health he has been obliged to enter the sanatorium at Waipukurau. His wide circle of friends and acquaintances in Taihape will wish him a speedy recovery.
