The most important conference ever held in Australia began in Melbourne this morning when the British Medical Association Congress opened. It is the first British Medical Association Congress held in the Southern Hemisphere. The occasion wa.s also notable for the fact that it brought for the first time to Melbourne the liner Aorangi, which carried a large, contingent of doctors. Melbourne was selected lor the Conference because of the centenary. Further homage was paid to the city by the election of a Melbourne doctor (Sir James Barrett) as president for the year. The keynote of the proceedings was the administration of dignity ami the importance of medicine in modern life. CDSTLY ORGANISATION Received Sept. 9, 1 1.50 p.m. MELBOURNE, Sept. 9. Including the Victorians, more than 3000 doctors are attending the congress. An idea of the cost of the organisation is gained from the fact, that the Aorangi’s delegation of 250 are spending £15(1,000 on fares. The proceedings today were mostly formal, consisting of the Mayor ami Premier’s receptions and the opening of the display of doctors’ hobbies at Hie university, where honorary degrees of doctor of medicine will be conferred on the following tomorrow: Lord lloi<ler. Sir Henry Gauvain, Doctors J. S. Fairbairn, Robert Hutchison, Edwin Bramwell, Sir William Wilcox, s r Lindo Ferguson. Sir Eden Mae Lean, 1.. Kaye, L. E. Fleming, ami Erie W. Fish. Dr. ILili i.inson, specialist in children’s diseases, interviewed, said that .\ustralia and New Zealand led the world in infant welfare. “I am particularly interested in the ethods of Sir Trill.\ King, which to some extent have been adopted in England,” ho said.
