THE MONTHLY MEETING ENGINEER'S REPORT The monthly meeting of the Waitotara County Council was held yesterday, Mr W. Morrison presiding. There were also present Crs J. Cameron, T. Alexander, R. Earley, L. T. Jones, A. A. Winwood, F. Handley, R. Laird and A. R. Richardson. It was decided to ask for legislation permitting £1 for £1 subsidy on all roads other than highways, instead of the present subsidy. ENGINEER’S REPORT The engineer (Mr. T. Dix) reported as follows on the progress of work for the month of August: “Auckland-Wellington Highway. More slips have occurred, some being of considerable size, in localities where the hillside is moving, slips are cleared sufficiently to enable traffic to pass safely. Weaknesses have developed in the asphalt pavement at Nukamaru, the cause is probably due to water getting into the subgrade, this section has been sealed. Minor defects in the pavements were repaired. The asphalt at tne junctions of Livingstone and Western Line roads with the main road, reveived thin seal coat. Fences in miles 3 and 4 were repaired. The loose surface of shingle on the macadamised section was renewed where required, the highway was frequently graded. ‘‘-Brunswick-Westmere Riding.— The Blueskin, Rapanui, Springvale Francis and Heads-Mosstown highways were metal patched and graded. The drain at the Westmere School corner Rapanui highway, was cleaned and loose stones on the Heads Mosstown and Springvale-Francis highways were gathered. The banking of curves on the Tayforth section of the last mentioned highway continues to be carried out under the No. 5 scheme of employment. The riverbank'. Seafield, Western Line, Brunswick ami Kaikokopu roads were graded. The Waireka, Campbell, Western Line, Brunswick and riverbank roads and Roberts .Avenue were metal patched. Slips were cleared along Kowhatpnui, Tokomaru West, Kaikokopu, Brunswick am! riverbank roans. Drains were cleaned along the Western lane, a corner on the Brunswick road is being widened under the No. t> scheme. Along the Tokomaru East road, slips were cleared, scrub was cur. a corner was widened: the Brunswick end of the road metal patched and graded. “Waitotara Riding.—The Wa totara Valley and Rangitatau-Watersned highways were, blocked by slips for a couple of days; it will take a tortnight before the flood damage is repaired, portions of both highways were metal patched and graded. The widening of the section of the Waitotara Valley near the township wlrch has been carried out under the No. 5 scheme, is now completed. The Rangltatau Wesi road was graded and metal patched, the Bushy Park road was also repaired. “Mosston Riding.—Parson*-- Street, Fitzherbert ami Jones Avenues, Surrey. Durham and Fox roads weir metal patched. Peakes and Fox roads and Fitzherbert Avenue were graded. “Tokoniaru Riding.— Slips were cleared along Kauarapaoa, Ahn Ahn Watershed and Ririp i roads and Rangi-lattiii-Watersliod highv. ay.
