•■MIMI” COMMENCING Every oucc in a while—alas! all too seldom—there comes to the screen a motion picture which is outstanding by i virtue of its extreme beauty and rare I entertainment delights—a ’ film skiljlully blending al] the ingredients of | audible screen art, charming story, i radiant stars, artistic settings, bcauti- [ ful photography, perfect recording and last but by no means least, brilliant direction. Such a picture is “Mimi,” British 1 nternationaj Pictures’ adaptation of Murger’s famous play “La Vie <lo Boheme.” which conies to the Majestic Theatre to-day. Much of the credit tor the success of “Mimi” must go to the director, Paul Stein, who with this Him has completed what English critics term “an entertainment hat-1 rick,” following on his previous 8.1. P. directorial triumphs in “Red Wagon” and “Blossom Time.” “Mimi” is the love story of Rodolphc, a young playwright struggling for fame in the garrets of Paris, and of Mimi, darling of the Latin Quarter. And in all the world no love like tholr’s. Love born in Rodolpke’s rooftop studio—inspiring ambition, bring ing happiness to a carefree band of artists* How delightful is Stein’s interpresetation of the unforgettable romance of these lovable characters, at limes reminiscent of those in “Beau Geste. ” Lavish settings are additional highlights of the production, particularly the big Venetian carnival scene with hundreds of dancers gaily joining in the spirit of celebration. Stein caught the atmosphere of the whole sequence— with its inconsequent gaiety and artistic unrestraint. This spirit, so characteristic of the Paris Latin Quarter, pervades the whole Him right, until the unforgettable ciimux. With the production of “Mimi,” Stein has won for himself a proud place among the greatest, motion picture directors of the world. An Austrian by birth he has had great experience, having made pictures un the Continent as well as in Hollywood and Elstrce. The cast, of “Mimi” is headed by Gertrude Lawrance, brilliant and versatile English actress, in the title role, and Douglas Fairbanks, jun.. the handsome and popular Hollywood star, as Rodolphe. Others who give excel.ent performances are Richard Bird. Diana Napier (Richard Tauber’s fiancee), Harry Warrender. Carol Goodner, Austin Trevor and Paul Graetz.
