PETROL PRICES

CUTTING IN WELLINGTON. NO CHANGE IN WANGANUI. “No change has been made iu the retail prices of petrol iu Wanganui,” stated the president of the Wanganui Petrol Resellers’ Association, Air. D. AV. Gilbertson, last night, when asked by the “Chronicle” whether he had any remarks to make regarding the Wellington report that petrol prices had been reduced. Air. Gilbertson added that apparently the Wellington action had been taken by some underselling resellers. The Wellington Evening Post yesterday stated:— The retail price of petrol in Wellington and suburbs was reduced from midnight last night to Is 8d for first grade spirit and Is 9d for super grade, a reduction of 2d per gallon. In a statement made to-day, the Wellington Petrol Resellers’ Association says that the drop is not due to a change in the wholesale price, but to price-cutting by certain station owners in the city and suburbs. The statement continues:—“As petrol is bought from a common source at a common price, underselling on the part of any one reseller immediately disrupts the whole retail price structure. Notwithstanding the fact that the new prices, if they are allowed to obtain for any length of time, may mean bankruptcy for several petrol station owners, there seems to be no other course.”
