visitors then instituted a strong attack and an infringement relieved the position for Wanganui. Taranaki forced a penalty, but Howatson cleared. Taranaki was now attacking strongly and during a subsequent ou slaught on the Wanganui goal Webby put in a hard shot which missed the net by only a foot, ’faranaki again pressed, but an infringement prevented Johnson from scoring. Taranaki, at this stage of the game, were doing most of the attacking and from another fierce onslaught. Wanganui retaliated by bringing the play into Taranaki territory, Wallace forcing a penalty which Taranaki cleared. Wungnnui again rallied and from a bright, forward move Sherriff goaled.—Taranaki 2. Wanganui 1. The teams were settling down to hard work and the game became faster, each side attacking alternately. Howatson made a fine, solo dash, but the Taranaki defence proved too strong to permit success. During a subsequent Taranaki attack, B. Ryburn scored.— Taranaki 3, Wanganui .1. Allen was again called upo*. to sav* and for a while the situation appeared dangerous for Wanganui. Their goalie was successful, however, ami once again the Wanganui forwards broke ,away, this time on the right wing. Howatson took a shot at goal, but missed. Taranaki retaliated by bringing the play into Wanganui territory, but Allen saved well. Taranaki’s next attack was spoilt by an infringement and gave Wanganui an opportunity of breaking away. Howatson was again prominent when he sent in a hot shot. Baldock stopped the ball but Stewart caught him unawares and flicked it past the goalkeeper’s pads.—Taranaki 3. Wanganui 2.

Shortly before the whistle went for half-time, Wanganui attacked on the right wing. Stewart centred to Wallace, who goaled, and the. first spell ended.—Taranaki 3, Wanganui 3.

The second spell opened with Wanganui making a strong attack. V few minutes later, however, Taranaki reversed the position and Johu.-on made a splendid solo dash which resulted in another goal for Taranaki. —Taranaki 4, Wanganui 3.

Taranaki again attacked, but Alien kept the visiters at bay and Stewart secured the ball. The Hinemoa forward made a line solo dash, but Taranaki’s defence was too sound. Another strong attack by Taranaki forwards was spoilt by an infringement. Play again centred in midfield until Johnson secured and went right through to score.—Taranaki 5, Wanganui 3. Play was slower at this stage. Wanganui attacked on the right wing; I Ransom centred well to Howatson, who I sent in a hard drive, only to be frusI trated by the Taranaki goalie. WanIganui forced a penalty, but nothing eventuated. An amusing incident occurred when Wanganui again attacked on the right wing. The ball was sent across to a Taranaki player, but just as he was ibout to stop it, Btewart jumped at. his r’ee‘‘ and knocking him over carried th? ball upfield. Wanganui were now lining the right wing frequently. Howat.son again carried play into the Taranaki circle, but an infringement by one of the Wanganui forwards spoilt, a good opportunity. Taranaki ed again and \llen took a chano •»)• going out Io stop the ball. His move was successful and thp good savp won the applause of the crowd. Wanganui attacked on .several occasions after this, but Taranaki met them witn a solid j wall which it. was impossible to pe-ie-trate and the contest ended.- Taranaki 5, Wanganui .:. Messrs. J. S. D.
