FARM LABOUR

Sir. I .was rather surprised to learn from ‘ ‘ Brutus ’ ’ ’ letter that 1 am among the ranks of the unemployed and that f have squandered all my earnings. Fortunately, 1 look to the future. “B tutus” must be thinking of the “spots ou the sun” theory when he thinks that .1. am referring to the happenings of nature when I state that crises are periodic. They certainly occur at intervals, as has been seen in the past, and 1 daresay they will so happen in the future. Men with more brains than “Brutus” or T possess have studied such problems and have failed to lind a solution, so he anc 1 are hardly in a position to offer any suggestions. They have just to run their course. All we can do is to be prepared for such an occasion. It would be more correct to say that these crises are the result of over-capitalisa-tion. 1 see that “Brutus” is unable to draw a distinction between squandering and spending wisely. For instance, where a man puts a good bit of his spare cash down his throat 1 should say that is squandering. Possibly “Brutus” will disagree with me on this point. It is easy to see from “Brutus’ ” letter that he himself is financially enibarassed. I may mention that there are men whom one would call farmers and others who farm from the armchair, so to speak, and it wouldn’t matter how much money they possessed they could not make a farm pay. It is only in reply to the latter part of my letter that “Brutus” frames his suppositions. He completely ignores that part referring to conditions on farms, other than wages. Here he is wandering far from the point and away to his favourite topic—the money question. 1 supposd the next thing that crops up will be how to pay off his moi l gage.— I am, etc., “UN OB RERO.”
