PATEA’S WHEELBARROW DERBY
IN AID OF SPORTS CLUBS. (Own Cc-ri‘espondent.) BATEA, Aug. 30. Eleven entries have been received for the wheelbarrow race to be held at Batea to-mororw night. For some time residents have watched reports of wheelbarrow Derbies in other towns, and now the sports clubs of Patea have combined in organising one of their own. The race will start from the Domain gate at 7.15 p.m. and will conclude at the Turi Memorial. Competitors will pass four barriers, at which they will have to hand certain sums of money to officials, who will then allow them to proceed. Funds raised in this manner are to be handed over to the Paten Athletic Club and the Patea Municipal Band. The following arc the entries re reived: Surf and Life-saving Club. Football Club, Fire Brigade, Railway Department, Wrestling Association. Alton Boxing Club, Boy Scouts, Patea Boxing Association, Municipal Band, the Patea Athletic Club, and the Maoris. great deal of amusement is ex peeled as most of the competitors will be disguised or in fancy dress. The Pat( i a Municipal Band will play the competitors down to the starting point and will be in attendance during the race, the length of which is half a mile.
