CHARLES R. D. TUCKEY BRITISH DAVIS CUP PLAYER. Charles Raymond Davys Tuckey, who figured in the Davis Cup challenge contest between Britain and America last July is 25 years of age. He was born at Godaiming and was educated at Charterhouse R.M.A. (Woowich) and Queen’s College. Cambridge. In 1931 he represented .Cambridge against Oxford and tho same year won the» Army singles and doubles championships. Great Britain recognised him in 1932 and he was chosen to play against Belgium and Wales. ’The same year ho represented the International Club against France CI.C.) at Queen’s, when, with C. E. MaLfroy (New Zealand), he beat Borotra and Gcntien and. also Boussus and Merlin in
doubles. In .1932 and 1933 he tetained his Army and doubles championships and in the former year won three events at Chatham. In .1933 he represented Great Britain in Germany and reached the final of the German doubles championship. He again played for the Internal inn! Club against the French International Club in Paris and at Queen’s. In the I.C. match he beat Rodel in the singles, after the Frenchman had been several times within a point of winning the second set. The scores were G—4, <B—G. In the doubles Gregory and Tuckey, who replaced Lee, lost to Borotra and Brugnon, G —B, G—3, 5—7.
ALL BLACK'S BIRTHDAY
WYNYARD REACHES MAJORITY. : J. G. Wynyard, the Te Awamutu forward in the All Black team now eu route to England reached his majority this week. Wynyard has the distinction of being both the tallest and the youngest member of the touring party. He was educated at the New Plymouth Boys’ High ►School in 1928-29-30, and he returned to Te Awamutu to engage in farming. Tn 1932, at the age of .17 years. Wynyard was playing Rugby in the Waipa sub-union, and the same season represented Waipa. In 1934 Ife won a place in the Waikato pack as a back-row forward, while in the early games this season he represented Waikato as a middle-row flank forward. He is 6ft. 3Ain. high and is the tallest forward ever to have represented New Zealand overseas. G. W. Nicholson, of the 1905 team, was 6ft. 3in., while •<!. J. Brownlie, of the 1924 combination, was the same height. Wynyard was officially weighed at list. 21b. prior to his departure. and as the common experience is that overseas tourists put on weight he might easily strip 15st. in < Great Britain.
