ALLEGED FRAUD
MAN AND WOMAN CHARGED LARGE SUM INVOLVED SAVINGS BANK DEPOSITS ( Per Press Association. ) WELLINGTON, Aug. 5. “Although thqy’re charged with respect to £lBOO that, isn’t the full amount involved. We know that they’ve been sending .money to Australia under fictitious names, ’’ stated Detective-Sergeant Revell in opposing an application for bail for Lawrence Edwin Din, or Dean, clerk, aged 23, and Madeline Elizabeth Din or Dean, domestic, aged 46, who were charged before the magistrate (Mr Stilwell) with conspiring by deceit to defraud the Post Office Savings Bank of £lB5O.
“There’ll be no bail as fur as this Court is concerned,” said Mr Stilwell in remanding aec-used to appear at Auckland on August 7. “Could the names be suppressed in thp meantime?” asked counsel. “Oh, no,” replied the magistrate.
Detective-Sergeant Revell said that on Saturday accused attempted to go to Australia and were arrested on the boat. The female accused had been before the Court previously. Counsel objected to this statement. Th,e magistrate said that he had not taken much notice of it, being more concerned with the attempt to leave the country.
