PIONEER TALES

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE RECORD. Something of a novelty was Io be seen at an exhibition held in connec tion with the Dominion conference o! the women's institutes at the Scots Hall, Auckland. For some time past the policy of the institutes has been to urge members to conserve wherever pos sible records of the past, of family his lory, of furnishings, clothes, etc., which portray the ways and things of early settlement days. At the .?<'ijference there was displayed a collection ol “Pioneer Tales” collected by II women’s institutes in various parts of New Zealand. Borne were but short, others long and comprehensive, notably that relating to the early history ol the Auckland district iu gie.eral and Titirangi in particular. Interesting con tributions going back as far as the ’forties came from Afercury Bay ( Whitianga), and from the Warau as far back as 1819. One, that from Kopuarangi, which has just celebrated its school jubilee, was illustrated by a -erics of old photographs and pictures. Another was set, out, with intriguing chapter heading, such as “ Alemories of the ’Fifties.'*’ “Laughs and Tears of the ’Sixties,’ ’“Over ihe Rimulakas ir ’Fifty-nine’’—this is of the Alaslcz ton district, compild by “Opaki W.l.’’ 'lhe whole set i? a forerunner of a movenienr, to reasure ami consoi". e the n einory of the pioneers, and. together with the preson revival in the olden handicrafts, contributes to form an ’n t ('resting phase in our history as a na tion in the making.
