The retention of the present tramways system at New Plymouth, at least for some years, a? opposed to a jroposa’ to gradually scrap the tramways and replace them with an overhead trolley bus system, was favoured by a com in it tee which submitted a comprehensive report to the Borough Council ton'ght. Factors which influenced the committee in reaching its recommendation were: (.1) The capital outlay (over £60.000) and the consequent am ual commiti) cuts; (2) relative maintenance cost: (3) the relative life of the alternative \ehicles; (4) cost of traction power, whether electricity, petrol or crude oil; (5) taxation of vehicles. Discussion of the recommendation was held over till r-xt meeting.
