AUCKLAND BEAT TARANAKI. [ Per Press Association. ] AUCKLAND, Aug. 3. The Auckland J/eaguc representative team defeated Taranaki in a high-scor-ing game by 37 points to 14 at Carlaw Park in fine weather, before a large attendance. In the first half Taranaki made a good impression ami boat Ihe Auckland forwards badly in the loose. Two splendid penalty goals from 40 yards out wore kicked by Bedford. Auckland led at the interval by 13 to 12 after a very even game.
In the second half the Auckland backs liPwihiered the opposition with clever in-and-out passing. The combination Brown-Mineham-Bright proved too speedy. The local backs outclassed the visitors, whose defence was weak. Thi Taranaki forwards battled gamely and heat Auckland for possession from the scrums. Superior knowledge of the finer points saw Atick’aml in a favourable light. Taranaki suffered numerous casualties and Keogh retired hurt. I’lay was generally fast and entertaining. In the latter stages Auckland took eon trol and the visitors were in no condition to check the speedy thrusts by the local five-eights. Hunt. Tamalea ami Bedford (ha<-ksi imide a good iniprcs sion for Taranaki, and McLeod and Davidson were outstanding forwards. In a curtain-raiser Auckland B <ie feated South Auckland by 17 points to 9 after a splendid game. South Auck land put up a really good fight, par’icu larlv in the first half, when they were easily superior. Again the local backs were outstanding.
