DUEL FOUGHT
ENGLISHMAN THE VICTOR FOREIGNER WOUNDED AFFAIR AT AUCKLAND [ Per Press Association. ] A ICELAND, July 16. A duel with naked swords is reported to have been fought in Auckland last Friday night. I lie victor in the contest was a former English army officer, who with his sword nicked the upper arm oi his opponent, who thereupon withdrew. The dispute which lc<l to the duel arose in an hotel between the Englishman and a stranger, said to be a foreigner, who had made a grossly insulting remark about. King George. The Englishman told him that he would not sullv his hands by striking him and challenged him to a duel, which the foreigner readily accepted. A duelling ground was found in a room on the top floor of a city building. {Seconds were appointed and coats and collars having been removed, the fight began, duelling
swords being used. They fought for several minutes and neither gained an advantage until the Englishman ran his sword through the fleshy part of his .antagonist’s arm. His honour being satisfied, the contest so ended.
