RELIEF CAMP WORKERS
RETURN TO CITY WORK UNEMPLOYMENT BOARD’S PLAN [ Per Press Association. J AUCKLAND, July 8. A plan, enabling city men who arc now employed in country relief camps to return to town, has been devised by the Unemployment Board, and particulars have been supplied to certifying officers and local employing authorities throughout the Auckland district, 'lhe concession, will apply to camp workers who are employed at relief rates of pay and have been in camp for a long period. In the circu'.ar the Commissioner of Unemployment states that it has been, decided that so far as the single men arc concerned, those who have been employed in a camp at unemployment relief rates of pay for a continuous period of 12 months or more, may on request be permitted to return to town and immedian>y be placed on relief. They an? to be panted relief in town for at least ore month, the alternative of leaving their, on relief in town in excess of tlis period or allocating them for further camp work being then entirely a matter for the certifying officer’s discretion. In such cases, states the commissioner, the fare from camp to town will be payable by the Unemployment Board. In regard to married men who have been employed continuously for 1nionths or more in an unemployment relief camp where reiief rates of pay apply, the commissioner announces that such men, on making application, should be allowed to return to town and be granted relief under {Scheme 5 or on sustenance. These married men’s relief camps are confined mainly to the Auckland district, and the instruction in regard to married men will apply only in a very few centres.
