WINTER AT TRENTHAM

WELLINGTON RACING CLUB STEEPLECHASE MEETING PROSPECTS FOR TODAY. (By “Kestrel.”) The winter meeting of the Wellington Racing Club will be held at Treu tham this week, commencing to-day, and being continued on Thursday and Saturday. As the New Zealand Racing Conference is to he held to-morrow, it mav be taken for granted that the leaders of racing in the Dominion will be present in force when the fixture opens at Trentham this morning. Fields for all events to-day are large and the prospects of large dividends being paid appear to be just, as Lkely as ever, for the heavy rain experienced at Wellington over the week end would tend to bring about some upsets of form. Thu win-aud place system oi betting which operates at Trentham lends itself to the provision of large div idends for little-fancied winners, while even those who patronigo the place machine van be assured of generous returns. The records show that few place dividends at Trentham are under £2. The first event to-day. at 11.30 a.m., is the 11.30 MARIRI HACK & HUNTERS’ STEEPLES (Of £2OO ; about 2J miles).

A dozen made the final acceptance and up to yesterday The Ranger had been the only defection. Recent winners in Cotsfield and Diamond are likely to share the attention of backers, though the ’Buy winner Anemometer, will also have -friends. Then there are promising sorts in Reminder. Monastic, Petrarch. Cardhu and Tauru Lad. Altogether it is a good field to start off the meeting, but the favourites are likely to be Diamond, Cotsfield and Cardhu. A huge field is to contest the U 9 WOBURN HACK HANDICAP. (Ct £290 ; six furlongs).

This is a splendid field of hack sprinters, for there will be two dozen starters, and few of them can be discarded as having little chance. Sunny Maid, Full Throttle, Dollar Bill, Master Reynard, Solaria, State Bank, Hunting Cat, Isaacs. Gay Boy, Grand Score, Collision, McHeath, Happy Hunting. Landlubber and Linguist appear to comprise the likely division. Perhaps the public may vote for Dollar Bill. Grand Store and Isaacs. Next on the list is the 12.45 VITTORIA HACK HURDLES. (Of £2OO ; miles).

A baker’s dozen made the acceptance and even these present a problem for the punter. However, King Thomond will be improved as a result of his outing at Dannevirke, and that should cause him to be sent out favourite. Saltspray impressed at. Foxton and for that reason is likely to carry more support than Prince Vai. The way will thus be clear for the big sprint, the 1.30 STEWARDS’ HANDICAP. (Of £250 ; six furlongs).

With nearly twenty engaged this event, run over an almost straight six furlongs, may provide one of the surprises of the .day, though the records show that- well-backed candidates are generally prominent. Rebel Chief won ar Trentham at the Royal meeting in December and is back to form, for he was a recent winner at Ashburton. If Orapai can icproduce his best form he wili be hard to neat. Guarantee, Kemal Pasha and 'a Fox >;re recent winncis, and Slippery, Goon Hun’ing. Refresher, Cawbecn. Water Power, Tybalt, Astarth and Merry Peel are al; good winter perfor.i.c;s. Royal Bengal has gone well over sprint distances recently and Acceptable, Hunting Lodge and Prince Acre have reasonably goo i chances. If those remaining in hold their ground the starters will number a dozen, including the slablemates Tudor and Riotous, though these will not be bracketed. Included in the field is Billy Boy, hero of two past Wellington Steeplechases, but he will have to improve on recent form to win. Valpeen is another with a good record but not quite the recent recommendation of some opponents. Riotous has done better this season than last, when he fin ished third, so he should be well backed to-day. Royal Limond’s prospects will not he dimmed by any lack of brilliance since his arrival at Trentham. Dunmure comes from the South Island with a great reputation and may be in the final trio. Haakon is a good jumper

from Auckland and he can stay. Ruby Meteor should go well, and ot the other four London, Dozie (a Hawke s Bay winner), and Spalpiko (winner of hurdles at Dannevirke) all read well. To sum them up. a declaration must be made for Riotous, Royal Limond and Spalpiko. This will be followed by the TRENTHAM HURDLES. (Of £300; I’] miles I.

These contestants will give a line for the Winter Hurdles, to be run on Sat urday. Rasouli, who won this event and the Winter Hurdles last year, must again be given a great chance, formidable opposition will be provided by Hioh Grader, Stanch on, Hounslow. [Aladdin. Verden, Esteem, Manawatu, Travelling Agent and Lycidas. so that the material is present for a very interesting race. Rasouli is fairly certain to be well backed; but Stanchion and Travelling Agent should also be dangerous. The principal handicap event on the flat is the WHYTE HANDICAP. (Of £300; one mile). This is perhaps the stiffest problem which punters will ’..ave to solve. Both Guarantee, Water Power and Kemal Pasha claim the Stewards’ Handicap engagement also, but if started here I they will not be without friends. Last [year’s winner (Davoio) and last year’s | favourite (Curie) will be well supported, though the first-named has little • recent form to commend him. Lord Vai, Might, Croupier, West Tor, Horowhenua, Lapel, Miss Hushabye, Wino, Royal Gallant. Boudoir and Mercian Prince comprise the likely division, and good performances may bo expected from I.ord Vai, Boudoir and Croupier. A wealth of recent winning form is revealed here, while there are also several likely improvers. Royal Banquet, Wino (if started), Pukeko, Rebel Lad, Maine, Round Score, Arctic King, Reipar. Vocal, Kurapac, Lord Aloutoa, Hunting Bag and Dorado are a good lot. and from these investors may select Rebel Lad, Maine and and Reipar.
