Detective Kills Man Resisting Arrest
SHOOTS AFTER EFFORT TO BREAK UP A FIGHT Half-blinded by fine black puwder hurled in his face by a man he was about to arrest, Detective James C'armey, of the East 126th Street station, New York, drew his revolver and shot the intended prisoner dead. The victim was Johannes Tann, 55 years old, a roomer at 168 East 128th Street, who had been on the home relief rolls. A week before he was said to have gone to the 126th street station to complain that his room had been entered. Detective Carney promised to investigate. The detective went to the address and found Tann engaged in a light with James Garcia, the janitor. Carney arrived just in time to sec Tann fracture Garcia’s skull with a blow from a lead pipe. When the detective sought to intercede and arrest him, Tann took a package of powder from his pocket and hurled it. The fatal shot followed. Equine. “Have horses a sense of humour?” asks a writer.
