FUTURE BISHOPS

DECISION OF SYNOD. STRONG OPPOSITION. ( Per Press Association. ) HAMILTON, July 7. Strong opposition to a measure passed by the General Synod providing for a change in the method of appointing Bishops was expressed at the Waikato Diocesan Synod. The measure provided for the setting up of an electoral college consisting of three Bishops, two other clergy, and two laymen, whose duty it would be to select future Bishops. Under the present system the Bishop of a diocese is selected by the Diocesan Synod concerned. The Bishops in office are then asked to confirm the appointment. Canon J. L. A. Kyall said that the proposal aimed at ereting a form of autocracy. He was opposed to Synod delegating its powers to another body. Bishop (’herrington considered that the measure was invalid.
