The opening of the ccond Test took place in a heatwave with the proverbially eccentric Lord’s wicket playing at an easy pace. The attendance was 31,000. The South Africans began cautiously. Nichols, bowling fust-medium good length balls, was supported by sqdendid fielding. Alitehell, with a spinner, . got Siedle with his fourth delivery. Mitchell’s namesake dourly added seven runs in 50 minutes before playing forward, lie, became the first Test victim to the new leg-before rule to Nichols. Verity took Noursc with a good length ball and then rested after sending down eleven overs for seven runs Rowan provided a bright pafeh after lunch, hitting confidently before he fell a victim to Verity. When the sixth wicket fell the players wer 0 presented to the King, who received a great ovation. He shook hands with the players and chatted with the captains. Rowan batted 105 minutes, scoring 40. Cameron was soon a warm ite owing to his effortless Jiitting. He took sixers off Verity, Nichols and Mitchell. Wade was brilliantly caught in the slips, after whiuli Dalton, hitting hard, outpaced Cameron, but when he was 19 Langridge held a fast return. Balaskas, after an early escape from being stumped, was clean bawled by Verity. Cameron was bowled bv an in-swinger in the first over after tea. He batted 100 minutes without giving a chance. Tho Englishmen began confidently, but Sutcliffe fell a victim to the new leg-before rule before the fourth over. Wyatt altered the batting order, replacing Hammond by Leyland. Leyland batted 45 minutes when Halaskas’ googly, which he attempted to hit out of the ground, took his stumps. Wyatt and Hammond registered 50 after an hour’s batting.
