She is the first President’s wife to do so. MAJESTIC SIGHT LINER OFF SPITHEAD. Received May 30, 7.15 p.m. LONDON, May 30. i The Normandie was a superb spectacle when the vessel was off Spithead. She was ablaze with light and her illuminated name between the funnels stood out in nine-foot letters. Searchlights picked her up from the : hore, aeroplanes roared overhead, speedboats encircled her, and passengers in pleasure boats cheered. The Mayor of Southampton boarded and welcomed the ■liner, which was at anchor for two hours while the passengers embarked and disembarked. Then with three terrific blasts from her siren, she turned round, the crowds at Portsmouth, Southsea and Southampton watching her until she disappeared in the open Channel, with 350 workmen still toiling 1 to complete her fittings before arrival I at New York.
